MA’AN Development Center, in cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture and in partnership with Rift Valley Company, held a meeting with beneficiaries of the project “Scaling Up Climate Innovations and Circular Economy Practices in the Palestinian Date Sector” in Jericho and the Jordan Valley Governorate.
During the meeting, beneficiaries were introduced to the project’s activities and the roles of the different partners. The discussion also addressed key challenges facing the date sector and highlighted the importance of transitioning toward organic farming practices in date palm cultivation.
MA’AN’s legal consultant also highlighted the importance of legal considerations when entering into contracts with companies to safeguard farmers’ rights. Participants discussed several legal challenges faced by farmers, particularly those related to marketing and contractual arrangements.
The project targets 40 small-scale date producers, including women, men, and youth. It aims to strengthen their capacities in sustainable and climate-smart agriculture, improve the quality and safety of production, promote circular economy practices, and enhance their ability to access markets and value chains in a safe and equitable manner.
The project reflects a participatory approach to agricultural sector development based on inclusion, equity, empowerment, and partnership-building. It seeks to strengthen the resilience of small-scale producers and contribute to the sustainability of the Palestinian date sector.
The project also contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Zero Hunger, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Reduced Inequalities, and Climate Action. It addresses the impacts of climate change on agriculture and farmers, particularly smallholders.
In addition, the project promotes mutually beneficial partnerships between the private sector and small-scale farmers, contributing to the development of the private sector while supporting small producers and strengthening their opportunities to access markets and participate effectively in the economy.
