MA’AN Rehabilitates Sewage Networks at Three Shelters in Khan Younis, Supporting 588 Displaced Families
In response to the urgent humanitarian needs of people affected by the crisis in the Gaza Strip, MA’AN Development Center carried out maintenance and rehabilitation of sewage networks at three UNRWA-designated shelters in Khan Younis Governorate. The work was implemented under the UNICEF-funded project “Emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Response for Affected Populations in the Gaza Strip.”
The interventions included repairing external sewage networks, cleaning sewer lines and manholes, removing accumulated waste, addressing faults in external piping, and mitigating the resulting health hazards. The work covered the following shelters:
Khan Younis Co-educational Elementary School (E) – Abu Hadaid.
Khan Younis Co-educational Elementary School (A) – Siham (A).
Khan Younis Boys’ Preparatory School (A) – Old Al-Hourani.
These interventions helped improve sanitation conditions for approximately 588 displaced families—around 3,234 people—living in these shelters under extremely difficult humanitarian conditions. They also helped reduce the risks of contamination and disease transmission while improving environmental and living conditions for displaced families.
This intervention forms part of MA’AN Development Center’s ongoing efforts to strengthen water, sanitation and hygiene services and support a healthier, safer and more dignified living environment for affected communities.
