“Safety Net” Initiative Improves Sanitation Services and Promotes a Healthier, Safer Environment in Abu Hujair Camp
As part of the project “Supporting Community-Led Responses in Gaza,” the Protection Committee of Abu Hujair Camp in the Al-Zawayda area implemented the “Safety Net” initiative to improve sanitation conditions within the camp and its surrounding area. The initiative responds to an urgent priority identified by residents through consultation sessions, feedback mechanisms, and community meetings led by the committee.
The initiative included the construction of a sewage line connecting the camp’s internal network to the public sewage system. This intervention aims to address the risks resulting from the deterioration of cesspits and their inability to accommodate the growing needs of residents. These conditions had led to wastewater leakage, contamination, and soil erosion around some of the cesspits, posing direct risks to public health and safety, particularly for the most vulnerable groups.
The initiative benefits approximately 1,000 people living in the camp and surrounding area by improving sanitation services and reducing the risks associated with contamination and wastewater, thereby contributing to a safer and healthier living environment.
The “Safety Net” initiative also reflects the role of community protection committees in transforming priorities identified by residents into practical, community-led responses. It strengthens community participation in developing sustainable solutions to issues that directly affect people’s safety and basic needs
