NGO Book Exhibtion

Activity Update: September -- December, 1998
September Two experts from Australia began a 3-month work program at MA'AN to develop training modules for English language proposal and report writing. Supported by the Australian NGO APHEDA, their work was carried out in both Ramallah and Gaza.
September Huda Odeh, MA'AN's Training Programs Coordinator, was nominated to take up a 9-month education and training scholarship provided by the French Consulate. Huda is currently in Lyon, France, studying Community Development and Project Management.
October MA'AN held "The First Palestinian and Arab Regional NGO Book Exhibition" in Ramallah. Over 170 Palestinian institutions from the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the 1948 Palestinian territories, as well as NGOs from Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan, participate -- including a number of international NGOs. The Book Exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Friedrich-Naumann Foundation, and through Bunian's program of Capacity Building and Networking of NGOs, which is supported by the European Commission. Two publications were produced: A Directory of local Palestinian and regional NGOs, and the first Bibliography covering the publications of local Palestinian and regional NGOs. An Internet database of NGO publications was also produced.
October MA'AN published its Profile, which outlines the Center's development work and research studies. Please contact MA'AN for a copy of the Profile.
October MA'AN organized and hosted an Australian Study Tour brought to Palestine by a partner NGO Australian People for Health, Education, and Development Abroad. The study group was headed by Sir Ronald Wilson, former High Court Judge of Australia and currently the President of the Australian Council for Overseas Aid -- a peak body representing over 100 Australian NGOs. The study tour traveled through-out the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, meeting various organizations and individuals. In his press release back in Australia, Sir Ronald said the following: "In this climate of enormous tension, uncertainty and frustration, the role of international aid is enormously important. The sense of empowerment that small community based aid projects can provide helps maintain the essential fabric of society when everything else seems to be tearing apart".
October An Australian specialist representing the Sydney Permaculture Centre is sent by APHEDA to conduct a joint permaculture course with MA'AN and the Marda Sustainable Development Center. The course is directed to agronomists.
November/December Based on MA'AN's pre-qualification status with the Welfare Association Consortium, MA'AN won the bidding for the 1st cycle of the Consortium's Capacity Building Program.  MA'AN was contracted by the Consortium's Project Management Organization to conduct Project Planning and Proposal Writing Workshops for Palestinian NGOs. Eight workshops were conducted in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with 177 trainee participants, of which 72 are women.
December MA'AN secures the support of the Heinrich Böll Foundation for our "Agricultural and Development Issues" page in the Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds. The page will be extended by publishing relevant articles and commentaries on MA'AN's Internet web site. Heinrich Böll is also supporting the writing and publication of an Instructional Guide on the detrimental effects of Pathogenic Chemical Pesticides. This guide will provide practical information on organic alternatives to chemical pesticides.
December MA'AN won the support of the Australian Embassy and the South African Representative Office to continue development work in the village of Beita in the West Bank. This involves supplying Beita's Women's Development Committee with a computer, printer, educational aids, and administrative training; as well as the installation of Grey-Water gardens, well repair, and training in health for the community
December MA'AN, in partnership with World Vision, applied for pre-qualification in the Welfare Association Consortium's 1st cycle Bloc Grant
December MA'AN refurbished its computer laboratory by installing a new set of 14 PCs and a Server, programmed with Windows NT. The Computer Training Program will recommence in February.
December MA'AN installed an NT network for its office PCs, improving efficiency and communication.
December MI International (Memorial University) of Canada supported MA'AN through a Training of Trainers course in Effective Instruction conducted in Ramallah. Twelve representatives of local NGOs attended this workshop delivered by a Canadian trainer and MA'AN.
